What mixes well with cider? ›

Traditionally cider is spiked with dark spirits, like the rum and bourbon in the recipes above. But what if you want something a little lighter? Vodka can do the trick. Since it doesn't contribute much in the way of flavor, we add fresh ginger for its distinctive, peppery-sweet flavor.

Just think of how many well-known and long-lived beverages prominently feature citrus flavors. Margaritas, mojitos, gin and tonics, gimlets, daiquiris, caipirinhas, and Moscow mules are all improved by lime juice's fresh, zesty flavor.

Orange juice works with gin, vodka and rum — freshly-squeezed adds another layer of texture and flavor. Grapefruit juice is better with gin than vodka, as the florals of gin and the sharpness of the juice complement each other nicely and is always a great match with rum and tequila.

co*cktails in the Old fashioned family include the Monte Carlo (Rye whiskey, Benedictine. Angostura Bitters, lemon twist, no sugar), American Trilogy (Rye & Applejack, orange bitters, brown sugar cube) and Chet Baker (aged rum, barspoon honey, 2 barspoons sweet vermouth, bitters and orange twist).

Instructions. Add the apple cider and orange juice to a pitcher or punch bowl. Add the ginger beer, sliced apple and sliced orange to the pitcher right before serving. Serve over ice.
