Empowering the Future of Oil and Gas in East Africa: A Story of 141 Graduates
In a significant step towards shaping the region's energy landscape, the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) Academy at Uganda Petroleum Institute Kigumba (UPIK) has celebrated the graduation of 141 students. This milestone marks a crucial development in building local expertise for East Africa's emerging oil and gas industry.
The EACOP Academy, launched in August 2024, is a flagship initiative by EACOP Ltd in collaboration with UPIK. It aims to provide young individuals with practical skills across various disciplines, ensuring they are ready to meet the challenges of the energy sector.
A Holistic Approach to Vocational Training
The academy's curriculum covers a wide range of subjects, including Mechanical, Electrical, and Production disciplines, as well as Instrumentation, Leadership, and Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) training. This comprehensive approach ensures graduates are well-equipped to handle the technical and operational aspects of the industry.
Building on Success: The EACOP MOOC Legacy
The EACOP Academy builds upon the success of the EACOP Massive Open Online Course (MOOC), which attracted an impressive number of registrations and completions across East Africa. From this pool of interested individuals, 110 trainees from Tanzania and 31 from Uganda were selected for an intensive training program at UPIK, tailored to industry needs.
Aligning with National Priorities
The curriculum is designed to meet both national development goals and the operational requirements of EACOP. This alignment ensures that graduates are not only prepared for direct employment within the regional energy value chain but also contribute to the long-term growth and sustainability of the sector.
Inclusivity and Community Empowerment
A notable aspect of this graduation cohort is the representation of 25% women and 80% individuals from communities along the pipeline route. This highlights EACOP's commitment to inclusivity, local participation, and empowering communities to actively engage with and benefit from the oil and gas industry.
Words of Inspiration
At the graduation ceremony, EACOP Deputy Managing Director JB Habumugisha motivated the students, emphasizing the importance of discipline and attitude alongside skills. He said, "Today, you stand on the shoulders of giants, but tomorrow, you will be the giants. Remember, skills without discipline and the right attitude are meaningless."
Enhancing Training Capacity and Career Prospects
Mr. Bernard Ongodia, Director of UPIK, praised the partnership with EACOP, stating that it has enhanced the institute's training capacity and transformed career prospects for young people across the region. He highlighted how industry-led training initiatives can effectively align with national priorities to create sustainable employment opportunities.
A Commitment to Regional Development
The graduation ceremony was attended by key stakeholders, including members of the EACOP Senior Leadership Team, officials from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development (MEMD), and representatives from UPIK's leadership and faculty. This event reflects EACOP's growing dedication to developing local expertise and promoting regional participation in oil and gas projects, ensuring East Africans are integral to the sector's success.
And this is the part most people miss...
EACOP's initiatives go beyond just training; they represent a commitment to empowering local communities and ensuring that East Africans are not merely beneficiaries but active participants in the growth and development of the oil and gas industry. This approach sets a new standard for inclusive and sustainable development in the region.
