Fans of Peggy Carter would love to see Hayley Atwell return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, the actress herself seems far less excited by the idea. In a cinematic universe that has yet to see a female superhero take center stage, Peggy Carter was one of the popular female characters to come out of Marvel's early films. While she was a love interest for Captain America, she was capable of taking care of herself and holding her own when things got dangerous. The popularity of the character led to two seasons of Agent Carter on television which followed Atwell's character in the events following Captain America: The First Avenger.
While Peggy Carter passed away during Captain America: Civil War, the fact that time travel has been rumored to be part of Avengers 4, and is certainly possible due to the existence of the Time Stone, has made some wonder if Agent Carter might be seen again, but, unless Hayley Atwell is playing coy in order to hide the secret, it certainly doesn't seem to be the case. She says she hasn't even seen Avengers: Infinity War and thus wasn't actually aware of the mechanics that would allow her to return.
Instead of looking back, Hayley Atwell is looking forward toward the work that she is currently doing, like her Howard's End TV series. Having said that, she only has positive things to say to Huffington Post about her time working with Marvel. She says the studio made her feel "safe and empowered," quite the opposite of the "Hollywood sphere machine" she is used to working in, so if Marvel actually did call her and ask her to come back, it seems likely she'd at least entertain the idea.
Hayley Atwell does ask an interesting question though, will the genre ever die? At this point it certainly isn't looking likely, the fact that it is so multifaceted means that it has the ability to change over time and go in different directions, so if tastes do change the genre may have the ability to adapt. While we may never see Hayley Atwell in the MCU again, the end of Phase Three will certainly be a major point of closure, fans will certainly be glad she was there for a while.
