Jake Weatherald's Ashes Selection: A Surprise Pick for Australia's Opening Batter (2025)

Aussie Cricket Shake-Up: Weatherald Gets the Nod, Konstas Out!

The Australian cricket team has just made a major announcement that's sure to get fans talking. Jake Weatherald has been selected for the extended Ashes squad to face England in Perth later this month, marking a significant moment for the opening batter. But here's where it gets interesting: this decision came down to the wire.

Weatherald, a 31-year-old opener from Tasmania, has been a standout performer in the top order over the past couple of years. His inclusion in the squad means that Sam Konstas has been dropped. Veteran cricketer Matt Renshaw, favored by many seasoned judges including Steve Waugh, also missed the cut.

Weatherald's place in the starting XI isn't guaranteed. He'll likely play in Perth if Cameron Green can bowl the necessary overs as an all-rounder. However, if Green isn't up to the task, Beau Webster might retain his spot, with Marnus Labuschagne opening alongside Usman Khawaja.

The squad is only for the first Test, which kicks off in Perth on November 21st. Selection chair George Bailey told reporters that the final XI is still under consideration.

"What’s impressed us about Jake is if you look at his performance over 18 months to 24 months, it’s been really solid," Bailey explained. "I think there is a method there that we like and is complimentary to those other players around him in the squad. He scores at a good rate and the way he goes about his innings is impressive."

Regarding Konstas's omission, Bailey said, "I feel for Sammy. We really like him. He’s been in and around the Boxing Day Test, he’s been on subcontinent tours … so we like the skill set there. Confident over the long run it’ll build out. It’s not going to be linear. The message is to keep it simple and score runs."

Bailey also noted that the squad provides good balance, with 14 of the chosen players participating in the next round of the Sheffield Shield, allowing the selectors to gather more information before the first Test.

Australia's Ashes Squad: Steve Smith (c), Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Cameron Green, Travis Head, Beau Webster, Josh Inglis, Alex Carey, Jake Weatherald, Mitchell Starc, Scott Boland, Nathan Lyon, Josh Hazlewood, Sean Abbott, Brendan Doggett. Pat Cummins is also traveling to Perth.

Controversy & Comment Hooks: Do you agree with the selectors' choices? Do you think Weatherald is the right pick, or should Konstas have been given the opportunity? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
