A postpartum herbal bath is exactly what every new mother needs during those early days. Here is a blend of herbs and safe salts carefully selected for you to prepare ahead and have on hand when you are ready!

What is a sitz bath?

Many new mothers choose to take a sitz bath to during their recovery. Some people use an attachment on the top of their toilet (which is great if you are concerned about slipping or are struggling to get up and down still) or it can be done in the bathtub. You use a small amount of warm water, not a full bath. It helps to clean and soothe the areas that need a little TLC postpartum. A sitz bath help support in the relief of pain, swelling, and itching.

Today I will be giving the steps for a postpartum herbal bath using a regular bathtub along with the recipe!

When can I take a bath after having a baby?

What herbs are good for a postpartum bath?

Today I am using lavender, calendula, chamomile, yarrow, and plantain leaf. Each has properties that are perfect for supporting recovery postpartum! The herbs I have selected will work together to help heal, prevent infection, bring down inflammation, and ease muscle fatigue.

Lavender (Lavender Angustifolia) has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. It is also known to help ease the feeling of anxiety and reduce insomnia.

Calendula (Calendula Officinalis) has antimicrobial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties.

Chamomile (Matricaria Chamomilla) has antioxidant properties and is known to help reduce insomnia. It is a calming and soothing herb with a lovely light scent.

Yarrow (Achillea Millefolium) is a seriously underappreciated herb! It has properties that help stop wound bleeding and can even reduce heavy menstrual bleeding. (Keep this in mind for the future!) Yarrow has properties that are believed to improve circulation, lower blood pressure, and reduce the appearance of varicose veins.

Plantain leaf (Plantago Lanceolata) has properties that are antibacterial and anti-inflammatory.

What can I put in my bath postpartum?

Alongside these herbs, I suggest adding Epsom Salt. It can support you with reducing swelling and help to avoid infections all while promoting the healing process. Epsom Salt can help to soothe any tearing and/or hemorrhoids. The salt can help to relax your muscles as well!

Postpartum Herbal Bath Recipe

What You Need

  • Measuring spoons.
  • Medium sized bowl.
  • Spoon.
  • Glass jar with a lid.
  • Measuring cup.
  • Pot.
  • Metal strainer.

Ingredients

  • 5 tablespoon Yarrow (Achillea Millefolium)
  • 4 tablespoon Plantain Leaf (Plantago Lanceolata)
  • 3 tablespoon Lavender (Lavender Angustifolia)
  • 2 tablespoon Calendula (Calendula Officinalis)
  • 2 tablespoon Chamomile (Matricaria Chamomilla)
  • Optional: ¼ cup Epsom Salt

Directions

  1. Measure out and combine the herbs and (optional) Epsom Salt. Mix it all up well!
  2. Store the postpartum herbal bath tea blend in a sterile glass jar with a lid until ready for use.
  3. Measure out ½-1 cup of the herbal blend.
  4. Fill a pot with water and bring it to a boil.
  5. Remove from heat.
  6. Add your herbs and allow them to steep for about 1 hour.
  7. Optional: Stir until the salts are fully dissolved into the tea.
  8. Fill the bath up with warm water to just above your thighs.
  9. Using your metal strainer to catch the loose herbs, pour your brewed tea into the bath.
  10. Enjoy your bath!
