The arrival of Deadpool into the official MCU was one of the most anticipated events prior to the release of , but now that he is there, the question shifts to if he will return. , making the most money for the MCU since Spider-Man: No Way Home. It's reasonable to assume that Marvel will want to bring him back in some capacity following that success and the leaves the door open for Wade Wilson to eventually return to the MCU.
In 2009, the character was officially introduced on the big screen as his alter ego, Wade Wilson, played by the brilliant Ryan Reynolds, who had an evolving relationship with the comic book character. This first iteration had some glaring issues, but Reynolds got a chance to redeem Deadpool just a few years later. In 2016, Deadpool starred in his own movie set within the Fox X-Men universe, and that's where he remained until Fox was purchased by Disney in 2019.
Will Deadpool & Wolverine Return For A Sequel?
Deadpool & Wolverine 2
Now, both Deadpool and Wolverine, played by the actors who arguably became the quintessential faces of these heroes, are both stars in an MCU movie. After years of anticipation and outcry from fans, Hugh Jackman and Reynolds embarked on an adventure together that brought them into the Sacred Timeline. However, after all that time and effort, it is also possible that their first outing together could also be their last time suiting up.

The reception to Channing Tatum's Gambit was tremendous, but now Marvel Studios needs to decide what happens next for the forgotten hero and Tatum.

Deadpool & Wolverine primarily served as a way to bring the Fox X-Men universe and the MCU together, while being a proper introduction for the mutants. Reynolds is fast approaching 50, and Jackman is already in his mid-50s. While the heroes may have worked alongside Robert Downey Jr.'s Iron Man, and Chris Evans' Captain America, the MCU is beginning to look to younger stars to lead the way. With that in mind, it may not make sense for Reynolds and Jackman to come back for a sequel.
What's Been Said About Deadpool & Wolverine's MCU Future
Hugh Jackman And Ryan Reynolds Have Been Tight-Lipped
As with anything that comes from Marvel Studios, the answers about future developments are kept under lock and key. When questioned about sequels, or Deadpool and Wolverine's future in the MCU, both the leading men have tactfully disengaged and resisted answering any questions directly. While this may be frustrating for fans who wish to see their story continue, it is to be expected from the vault of secrets that is Marvel Studios.
There is strong speculation that at least Hugh Jackman will reprise his role for Avengers: Secret Wars.
While those involved have provided non-answers, it's worth speculating about what the future could have in store for Deadpool and Wolverine. One potential outcome is that the character's stories did indeed come to a satisfying end in Deadpool & Wolverine, working as a way to say goodbye and send them off on a high. The ending didn't completely shut the door to having either Deadpool or Wolverine appear once more in an MCU project, though. In fact, they could already be preparing for future appearances in the MCU right now.
The Most Likely Marvel Return For Deadpool & Wolverine
There Is Somewhere They Could Turn Up In The MCU
Since Marvel Studios likes to plan ahead, creating an interwoven tapestry of connected stories, it's unlikely that either Jackman or Reynolds will have a starring role in any MCU project which releases between now and 2027. 2027 is set to conclude the Multiverse Saga with the event film Avengers: Secret Wars, which could be the perfect opportunity to bring them back. Similar to Avengers: Endgame, this movie is expected to have huge crossovers, with gratuitous cameos from heroes in every corner of the MCU.

Marvel Studios' Avengers: Secret Wars is still scheduled for release in 2027, and Deadpool & Wolverine might have set up its storyline perfectly.

If Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds were to return to play Wolverine and Deadpool again in the MCU, this would be the most likely place for the characters to appear. On the other hand, considering the scale of the film, and what happened in Endgame, it's also the most likely place for their versions of the characters to die. This could be the best possible outcome for the characters, as it provides another return after Deadpool & Wolverine, but also a way to transition the roles to new variants who will be more suited for the future of the MCU.
How Deadpool & Wolverine Sets Up A Sequel
Their Story Can Continue In Another Film
Despite having a satisfying ending, Deadpool & Wolverine doesn't completely shut the door on continuing Wade Wilson and Logan's adventures together. Logan is officially in the same timeline as Wade, as the final scene shows them around the table with everyone else, enjoying each other's company. The final shot is of the two character's masks, possibly indicating that there could be more on the horizon.
Laura is there as well, saved from the void. There is still a lot that can be explored between Logan and Laura, especially diving deeper into everything she has experienced and felt since her first appearance in Logan. Characters like Gambit also survived in the end, meaning a sequel to Deadpool & Wolverine could continue to explore the multiverse, as they look for other characters to help save. Now that Deadpool and Wolverine don't hate each other, another team-up could be on the way.
